After your vinyl or linoleum flooring has been removed, there may be leftover adhesive sticking to the subflooring underneath. Try mixing some soap and hot water and applying the solution to the adhesive, allowing it to soak in, and scraping it with a floor chisel. If the adhesive still does not come off, try a wallpaper steamer or heat gun to soften the glue and make it easier to remove.
